One sunny day in July, Travis was a tourist in his own town. It was well overdue because he hadn’t been to the local Tehachapi Depot Museum until the day he took me there. Can you believe it? And he prides himself on being a serious museum goer. Granted, the grass is always greener on the other side and our local spots don’t really get the attention they deserve.
Tehachapi’s Depot Museum is managed by a sweet old couple who were quite attentive at making us feel welcomed. We “disturbed” their small town museum routine by being the very first visitors that day. We were given a detailed, private tour and taken on a journey to the golden age of Southern Pacific Railroads. The route goes straight through Tehachapi.
One of the landmarks the area is known for is the Loop. Travis says it’s a hot spot for railroad buffs and photographers who stop almost daily and take photos of it. He took me to it, but I didn’t have my wide angle lens with me so couldn’t capture it fully. I’ll use it as an excuse to come back and do it properly. I’ve seen some videos on YouTube and the area looks amazing in the winter, covered in snow. I’m definitely excited to return to the golden hills.
